Ambidextrous

Today I started a new(old) project. I am becoming ambidextrous by repetition, by muscle memory, by learning. This project grew out of conversations with Raphael M. Ortiz and of Mathew Barney‘s use of the medical term Hypertrophy in his art as a metaphor for human achievement. Raphael’s ideas revolve around the concept of human potential versus human destiny.
Potential being all that which a single human being is capable of achieving, which includes physical perfection or running a five minute mile.
Human destiny being a less definable characteristic that we, as a species, will one day achieve or should strive for.
From these conversations I developed a personal take on the whole idea of achievement and internalized it via this project.

The Ambidextrous Project:

This project consist of training my left hand by writing the word ambidextrous for as long as it takes to become…… ambidextrous. This daily ritual should theoretically teach my hand and brain to perform as well with my left hand as I do with my right, my thesis being that there really isn’t a reason for my lack of ambidexterity except for the fact that early in my childhood I made the decision to be right handed.
That or someone else made it for me; I don’t remember making it.

I will use as many notebooks and pens as necessary.
This is an ongoing project.

  • nope – the only memory part of this project would be the learned muscle memory that my left hand will eventually acquire. I’m never going to forget how you spell ambidextrous after this so I guess ill be memorizing that as well….
