Berlin Street Art

Walking around Berlin is as educative as going to a season’s worth of gallery trips to Chelsea, actually its even more inspiring. First off I love this mural by BLU. As soon as I saw this I knew I was in for an exciting day of sightseeing and walking around in the cold Kreuzberg area.

I was so impressed that I took pen to wall myself.
plus other peoples stuff:

but anyway heres some more BLU from the same area:

The Friedrichshain-Kreutzberg area is made up of two neighborhoods that were united by the city in 2001 . The areas are geographically united by one bridge. The pink giant BLU painted is right off of this bridge; in the picture you can see the train tracks and street that then join the mainland and lead to the other BLU mural a couple of blocks further.

GRL!!

This was an amazing squatter complex that we ran into while walking around the Weeding area in Berlin-Mitte. Later we found out from Campbell that the squatters turned the top floors of one of the buildings into a club/disco space in order to fight an eviction. The area is one were rents are cheap and people are poor, which would explain why such a great artist community centralized here.

This was a massive projection on the side of a huge old factory building. It was amazing to see the number of random projections all over the city. One that I particularly liked was projected onto an arched window from the inside of an apartment. To me, the street-side viewer, the window functioned as a magnified t.v. set which totally clashed with the building’s quaint old East-Berlin architecture.

The Hamburger Bahnhof entrance: (keep in mind that this is the Berlin equivalent of NYC’s M.O.M.A.)

The wall. The war.
Friedrich!!!!:

1up
. He was literally everywhere. It was during the latter half of the trip that I decided to document all the 1up pieces that I encountered since I had seen so many. A lot of them were up on buildings, inside train stations, along bridges in all areas of the city. 1up must keep busy all year round!.

@ a McDonald’s bathroom in the Friedrichshain area:

We tried talking to the people who live here but after we rang their bell a couple of times (a metal bucket hung up high with a rope that reached down by the door) nobody came out.

This wheatpaste reminded me of Ian McDeath.

oh yeah thats Nat.

I looked up the law of the land regarding graffiti and from what I found out it is still illegal in Germany. This however does not deter any artists from doing their thing around Berlin. In New York City legislation has passed that bans “people under 21 from possessing spray paint or broad-tipped markers” ( as reported here by the BBC) The year was 2006.
So there you have it, lots of beautiful illegal art.

  • LNYLNYLNY,

yo, i thoroughly enjoyed this post with all of its illegalness and the sub-articles you provided. a lot of beautiful images that we’re taught to reject in disgust and as vandalism. though i am still torn about graffiti… i don’t know. these images are great and it reminds me of this image in my mind of a context which i haven’t been exposed to yet, one which i am not apart of but sure seems to exist in its own beauty.
